Wine Maker Margo van Staaveren of Chateau St Jean

Sonoma has long been producing world class wine and Chateau St Jean has been leading the charge. Their wine Cinq Cepages was chosen as 1998′s wine of the year and followed up a few years later with a 2nd place finish.

Today we interview Margo van Staaveren who has played a pivotal role in every facet of the winemaking process at Chateau St. Jean dating back to 1979.

This is the first of a two part interview with Stephen D. Tanzer. Stephen is the Editor and Publisher of the critically acclaimed bimonthly “International Wine Cellar”, an independent journal founded in 1985. The IWC is read by wine professionals and wine lovers in all 50 states and 33 countries, and was the first American wine periodical to be translated into French and Japanese. Tanzer has also served as Senior Editor and wine columnist for Food & Wine magazine and wrote Food & Wine’s Official Wine Guide in 1998 and 1999.

Tanzer samples well over 10,000 wines annually, spending several months each year tasting and discussing wines with their makers, both in the U.S. and abroad. By covering the world’s most important wine-producing regions in considerable depth and on a regular basis, Tanzer has been able consistently to introduce his readers to emerging superstar producers on five continents. He is currently working on a comprehensive wine buyer’s guide, to be published by Barnes & Noble in October of 2006.

Attention GrapeRadio Listeners!!! Here is your chance to work “The Crush”. Bevan Cellars is looking for some help. Mother Nature has decided to ripen their Cabernet a little faster then they had expected so they had to move the harvest date up to Tuesday Oct. 11th. Because of the change they lost half of their crush crew (friends who were flying in for the weekend).

So before they hire non wine folks they thought they would see if four to six locals might enjoy getting their hands dirty. It is very hard work, they hand sort every single grape, but it’s always a magical day.

The wages are virtually non existent: A Crush Crew T Shirt, lunch, all the grapes you can eat and all the beer you can drink when completed.

They will start Tuesday morning, Oct. 11th, around 9:00 AM. The winery is in Sebastopol, ten minutes from Santa Rosa and an hour and ten minutes from the Golden Gate Bridge.
