I was looking forward to hearing about the recent phylloxera outbreak in Central Otago, NZ. I’ve heard from numerous sources of this vine louse disease in the area, but wouldn’t mind hearing from a direct source on the status. I was just very surprised that no one had mentioned this issue. Any comments would be greatly appreciated by the general wine geek!!
Jay
I have heard that the vines planted in mid-90’s were done so on non-phylloxera resistant rootstocks. These vines would have been producing their first fruit in the late 90’s and early 00’s, but already showing signs of decline. I can’t speak for anyone’s vineyard in particular, but the new plantings from ‘01 should be okay.

Great Question. When we did the interview Jay and I were still learning about the New Zealand area.
Since your comment we did a little research. Here is a recent article on the subject: http://www.wineint.com/story.asp?sectionCode=1&storyCode=2067
