Jean Rene Matignon Technical Director of Château Pichon-Longueville Baron
With a rich history dating back to the 17th century Château Pichon Longueville Baron is one of just two Pauillac second growths as determined by the 1855 classification.
Our guest is the Château’s Technical Director Jean Rene Matignon. We discuss many interesting topics such as the terrior, past tradition and the beautiful vineyards they hope to pass on to future generations.
The vineyards at Pichon-Baron are planted with 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc. The winery has a typical annual production of 24,000 cases.

The Château is one of the most well known in all Bordeaux.

Another great show, I love hearing from these old world wine producers. What they do is clearly a part of who they are and it shows.
Keep up the great work. - Russ
Tonight at dinner a friend of mine and I enjoyed a third growth ’78 Bordeaux.
We felt some nervous anticipation as the turpentine colored old cork was being drawn from the bottle. So many variables came together and reached their collective fruition in that moment, nearly thirty years later, and it was superb.
We then talked about the ‘70 Château Pichon Longueville Baron that we had three months ago when his wife gave birth to their daughter. His wife’s birth year was 1970 and he shared that vintage to celebrate the moment, and her hard work.
I believe the word that defines Mr. Matignon’s emotional connection to this great wine and the land is stewardship.
Thank you Russ and Steve for your comments.
I hope the 1970 Pichon Baron gave forces to the mother… Wines are made sensitively for this kind of moment!
