Rick Longoria of Longoria Wines

Today, in part four of our five part roundtable series: pricing rationale, picking maturity, more discussions on alcohol and ripeness in today’s “newer” Pinot Noirs, site-specific clones, and Chardonnay anyone?

A few facts: while the soils of the two areas differ somewhat (gravely and loamy in the south; sandy in the north), the climate remains nearly identical in both - cold and windy. Two major east-west roads pass through the AVA, Santa Rosa Road on the south and Hwy 246 on the north. Both lead to Lompoc, which has quickly become the ‘de facto’ wine capitol of the AVA.

Love the Santa Rita Roundtable series. It is great to sit back, relax and listen to the pros go on and on about a craft they obviously love.

One question or suggestion. As I listen to the roundtable, it is had for me to know which voice belongs to which person or maybe just as important, which vineyard. The gentlemen who at least sounds as if he were the youngest but most often the most enthusiastic seems to have a great deal of knowledge. Can you please let me know which vineyard he represents so I can try his wine?

Thanks and keep up the good work. You make my workout somewhat enjoyable…

Kevin, after looking at their pictures, I’ll leave it up to you to decide who’s younger. ;-) Actually, you may be referring to Wes Hagen - and yes, he’s ebullient and enthusiastic about what he does. The other guys have long since burned out - - I’m kidding, I’m kidding.

    hey team,
i just wanted to chime in on how much i am truly enjoying this whole series. (i’m still not quite done.) i had no idea how detailed vineyard management is, and this series is totally enlightening.

my only minor critique is that early on i had a hard time discerning if rick or peter was speaking (its hard to mistake wes’ voice for anyone else). perhaps in the future, the hosts might make subtle adjustments including using the guests names more frequently, espcially when there are multiple guests on the show.

as i said, very minor. i’m enjoying this show immensely as the information contained it is so vast. great guests and great format.
