2012 Hospice du Rhone Seminar – Why Spain (Still) Rocks

The first in our series of seminars from the 2012 Hospice du Rhone gets into Spanish wine. It’s no secret that Spain is producing many of the world’s great wine made from Rhone varietals. Yet, it was another eye-opening experience to taste through this first seminar. Moderated by Steve Olson and joined by importer Eric Solomon who has pulled together some of the top winemakers in Spain including: José Maria Vicente, of Casa Castillo in Jumilla; Daniel Jimenez-Landi, of Bodegas Jiménez-Landi in Méntrida; Bixente Ocafrain, of Bodegas Mas Alta in the Priorat; and Daphne Glorian-Solomon, of Clos Terrasses in the Priorat.

Join us as we hear first-hand about the geography and climate of this rugged country, and why it produces such compelling wines.

Vineyards of Sonoma County – with Anaba Wines

Anaba (“Anna-bah”) takes its name from the cool upward-flowing breezes called anabic winds that frequently stream through the estate Carneros vineyard during the warm summer months. Owner John Sweazey is thought to be the first vintner in Northern California to harness wind power to supplement power in his tasting room and storage facility.

The Director of Winemaking and Vineyard Operations, and the General Manager of Anaba is Jennifer Marion, a graduate of UC Davis who as been at Anaba since its launch. Join us as we talk with Jennifer about her multifaceted role at the winery and the Rhone and Burgundian varietals she crafts at Anaba. Along the way, the Grape Radio crew has quite a few laughs in this thoroughly enjoyable conversation.

Wines of the West Sonoma Coast

Situated along the California coastline, the vast Sonoma Coast AVA extends from the Sonoma County border with Napa in Carneros bordering on San Pablo Bay to Marin County and the Pacific Ocean 30 miles to the West, progressing north through Sonoma County and reaching its most northern limits at the Mendocino County border. It overlaps five other Sonoma County AVAs including the Sonoma part of Carneros, a sliver of Sonoma Valley, the western part of Chalk Hill, all of Green Valley, and most of the Russian River Valley.

The West Sonoma Coast unofficial subdivision extends roughly from Jenner in the South where the Russian River empties into the Pacific Ocean to Annapolis in the North and from the beaches to 5 to 12 miles inland including the first three ridges of the Coastal Range of mountains, extending more easterly in the South to include Freestone, Occidental, Green Valley and Sebastopol Hills where the coastal ridges flatten out.

Meet Soliste Cellars – with Claude Koeberle

Claude Koeberle is quite a fascinating study and has been called a “force of nature.” He is opinionated (“Many of California’s fruit-forward wines do not pair well with food”), devoted to Pinot Noir with religious fervor (“Cabernet Sauvignon is an evil weed”), and talkative. He could impress you with his culinary accomplishments (Apprenticed under Paul Bocuse and Alain Chappell, became the youngest 3 Star Michelin Chef in Paris, Chef at Ma Maison and L’Orangerie in Los Angeles, James Beard Award as a master chef, French Laundry partner, and one of the driving forces behind Creative Culinary Concepts, Inc., and K World Cuisine, Inc.), but he would rather talk at length about how he has taken old world (Burgundian) beliefs and applied them to produce wines with finesse and balance that work in harmony with fine cuisine.

Together with long time friend and business partner, Donald Plumley and their respective spouses, Claude started Soliste in 2005 with the release of a Sonatera Vineyard Pinot Noir. The name Soliste is derived from the special barrel or “soliste” that Burgundian winemakers reserve for their family and friends.

Join us as we talk with Claude Koeberle about his culinary career, and how it led him on a journey into wine.

2013 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Up Close and Personal with Kosta Browne

When Dan Kosta and Michael Browne created their eponymous label in 1997, they weren’t quite sure how long it would take to get it up and running. But, by the 2003 vintage everyone had dubbed them an “overnight success.” The movie Sideways was fueling the Pinot Noir craze, and Kosta Browne, with a waiting list to get on the mailing list, was certainly riding the crest of the wave.

In 2009, Dan, Michael and business partner Chris Costello were approached to sell a controlling interest to the Vincraft Group, Sonoma-based investment group. The offer – a reported $40 million! For guys who had pooled their tips as start-up money, the offer was literally too good to refuse. The agreement allowed some of the winery’s original investors, mostly friends and families, a chance to cash out their investments. As Executive winemaker, Michael would still oversee the winemaking, and it was not expected that business management or operations would change much.

However, one doesn’t build a brand without forming excellent business relationships. And, Dan and Michael were certainly adept at doing that very thing. Please join us, at one of seminars from the 2013 World of Pinot Noir, as we hear from Michael Browne, along with some of those very people without whom Michael freely admits, none of this would have been possible. Joining Michael are winegrowers Gary Pisoni and Dennis Koplen, with Fred Dame moderating – or, should we say, refereeing.
