Wineries of Oregon – with Ponzi Vineyards

It was the late ’60s, and Dick and Nancy Ponzi had moved their young family to Oregon’s Willamette Valley. After several research trips to Burgundy and an extensive search for an ideal vineyard location, they purchased 20 acres on a small farm just southwest of Portland. The Ponzi’s were about to embark on a quest to make great Pinot Noir in Oregon. It was a daring risk at the time, as the Pacific Northwest was not known to be a place to grow Pinot Noir. However, Dick and Nancy felt the Northern Willamette Valley’s climate was ideal for Pinot Noir. Cuttings were planted, and in 1970 Ponzi Vineyards was founded.

In 2012, winemaker Luisa Ponzi and sister Maria Ponzi continued in their parents’ footsteps by taking the reins as the winery’s owners and operators. Join us as we talk with Maria Ponzi about what it was like to grow up around the family vineyard, go away to school and consider other careers, but ultimately decide to return to the roots of the family farm.

Wineries of Oregon – with Formaglini Vineyards

Nestled among some of the very best vineyards sites in the Chehelam Mountains AVA is where the De Lancellotti family’s first block of Pinot Noir was planted in 2007. This particular site was chosen for its silica rich, sandy soils to a set of clones destined to thrive in this AVA. The neighbors that surround them here include Bergstrom and Adelsheim vineyards.

Their dry-farmed site sits on a level bench of sedimentary sandy soil with moderate water holding capacity and superior drainage. This combination is essential for Pinot Noir vines so they have enough water in the topsoil to sustain them through the summer. The site is planted with a mixture of Pinot Noir clones of 777, 828, 115, and Pommard. The vine spacing is high density with about 2,000 vines per acre, with one meter spacing between vines. The yield is less than 3 pounds per vine.

Today, there are two small vineyard blocks totaling just under five acres, and includes Lagrein, the Italian red grape variety native to the valleys of South Tyrol in northern Italy.

Wine in Film – “American Wine Story”

The wine industry always seems to make good subject matter for films and video. Some efforts are based on real figures, others on fictional characters. Some are romanticized versions of how we envision wineries, vineyards, and wines, while others seek to expose the unvarnished truth – embellished or otherwise. Less often, yet frequently more interesting, are films that inform us by documenting people’s experiences with growing, producing, or just drinking wine. The documentary, “American Wine Story” is a film that delves into the passion, the risk, the ingenuity, and the humanity involved in growing wine.

Join us as we talk with filmmaker David Baker about his film, “American Wine Story,” and his team’s efforts to capture, as David puts it “the story behind the bottle.”

Pinot Noir’s homeland will always be in Burgundy, France. But, outside of Burgundy, is there actually a more “suited” place for growing and making world class Pinot Noir? Obviously, this is a subjective matter – one for which there may be no definitive answer. Why? Because, as we already know, every ounce of grape-growing soil is different – all across the globe. Pinot there, is not Pinot here. That being said, is there some hidden meaning in the preponderance of Burgundian visits made to Oregon? Or, how about the purchases of Oregon vineyard land by Burgundians? What’s up with that?

Listen in, and judge for yourself, as a panel of Oregon winemakers from the 2014 WOPN discuss their local their soils, processes, and thoughts for growing and producing the best Pinot Noir possible in the New World. Wineries of Oregon – with White Rose Estate

Greg Sanders will easily admit that he doesn’t do anything half-way. So, it didn’t seem like a big deal for him to venture to Oregon to buy some land. But then the land turned into a vineyard, and the vineyard into an Estate…and then there was the winery.

Planted in 1980 to own-rooted Pommard clone pinot noir, the 10-acre White Rose Vineyard is one of the oldest and most storied vineyards in Oregon. Located on east-southeast facing slopes of volcanic Jory soils in the heart of the Dundee Hills, the vineyard sits at the top of the hill at 870 feet elevation, overlooking much of the Willamette Valley.

In 2009, they acquired an additional 4 acres of vineyard immediately north of the original site. This vineyard, was planted in 2001 to Dijon clone 115 pinot noir grafted to American rootstock.

Life with Maggie – Part 2

We last talked to Maggie about 3 years ago, just after she had embarked on her new venture at Antica Terra winery and vineyard, in Oregon. After working with Manfred and Elaine Krankl at Sine Qua Non for the better part of a decade, as well as starting her own label for California Syrah, Maggie was now (literally) knee deep into Oregon Pinot Noir.

The history of Oregon’s Antica Terra Wines began when a group of four individuals, including winemaker Maggie Harrison, purchased the winery in 2005 and two years later planted additional acres of Pinot noir, with more planting planned for 2008. The new winery came on-line in 2009. She purchases fruit from Shea, Cherry Grove, and Croft Vineyards to expand her palette of components.

For her own label, Lillian, a small lot collection named for her grandmother, Maggie is sourcing Syrah from a couple of Santa Maria Valley vineyards.

The 2008 vintage for Oregon Pinot Noir may be the greatest this decade and some have claimed it the best vintage in Oregon’s modern winegrowing history. I know you have heard this type of vintage hype many times before, but 2008 is the bomb in Oregon! The wines possess perfect balance with moderate alcohols and acidity harmonizing with ripe tannins and bright fruit. They are generally restrained at present, will need another few years in bottle to really shine, and many will easily last 15 years.

The Wines of Shea Wine Cellars – A Tasting Review

It should come as no surprise that one of our favorite things to do is taste wine. Well, Grape Radio’s Rusty Gaffney (aka, The Prince of Pinot) invited us to take part in a tasting of wines from Oregon’s Shea Vineyard – specifically, the wines made by Shea Wine Cellars from Estate fruit. It had almost been two years since we had last tasted a flight of wines from this vineyard (2005 vintage – Show 181), so we felt it was high time to take a look at them once again.

Although Oregon grows at least 15 or more varieties of wine grapes, it is the nearly 50,000 acres of Pinot Noir that gets the most attention. Pinot does quite well here, and 9 of the 16 AVAs (American Viticultural Area) in the state are planted to the famous grape of Burgundy. The largest amount of Pinot is in the northwest corner of the state in the Willamette Valley AVA, an area sufficiently diverse to have 7 sub-appellations within its boundaries. Shea Vineyard is located in the one of the Willamette sub-appellations, the Yamhill-Carlton District, officially established in 2005.

Planted by Dick and Deirdre Shea in 1989, the property is 200 acres of which 140 acres are planted to vineyards – 135 acres of Pinot and 5 acres of Chardonnay. The Willakenzie soils in this part of the state make it an ideal site for some world-class Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. After years of selling fruit to some of the West’s best known wineries, Dick and Deirdre founded Shea Wine Cellars in 1996, in order to produce wines from their Estate fruit.

Oregon and the Wines of Eyrie Vineyards

Jason Lett took over the winemaking reigns at The Eyrie Vineyards beginning with the 2005 vintage. His father, David Lett, founded The Eyrie Vineyards in the Dundee Hills of the Willamette Valley in 1966 becoming the first to successfully plant and vinify Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in the Willamette Valley. The Eyrie Vineyards specialized in in the trinity of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay. David Lett was so revered that in his later years he became affectionately known as “Papa Pinot.” David Lett passed away at the age of 69 in October, 2008.

Jason Lett trained at Maison Joseph Drouhin in Burgundy and has a degree in plant ecology from the University of New Mexico. He is committed to continuing the Eyrie style which emphasizes light, supple and ephemeral wines that age. Prior to this year’s International Pinot Noir Celebration, Jason conducted a complete vertical tasting of Eyrie Chardonnay dating back to 1970. Each vintage of Chardonnay is now available for sale to benefit Eyrie’s cellarmaster’s wife who must have a kidney transplant.

Oregon’s Willamette Valley

Possibly no other grape variety is as subject to the differences of terroir, as is Pinot Noir. And, no discussion or tasting of Pinot Noir would be complete without including Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Located West and South of Portland, the Willamette Valley is 150 miles long and nearly 60 miles wide, with 200 wineries and over 12,000 acres of grapes. Bounded by the Cascade Mountains to the East, the Coast Range mountains to the West, plus a series of lower hill chains to the extreme north of the valley, the Willamette Valley is one of those regions that illustrates the diversity of terroir. So much so, that in 2002, the vineyards and wineries of the region delineated and submitted petitions to the TTB to divide much of the northern part of the Willamette Valley AVA into six more specific AVAs. During 2005-06, the petitions were approved and the following sub-AVAs were created within the Willamette Valley: Chehalem Mountains, Dundee Hills, Eola-Amity Hills, McMinnville, Ribbon Ridge, and Yamhill-Carlton District

Rusty Gaffney (Prince of Pinot) selected 12 wines for us to taste, 2 from each region or district. Join us as we explore the wines of these sub-AVA regions, to discover their differences, as well as their similarities. The wines:
