Nestled among some of the very best vineyards sites in the Chehelam Mountains AVA is where the De Lancellotti family’s first block of Pinot Noir was planted in 2007. This particular site was chosen for its silica rich, sandy soils to a set of clones destined to thrive in this AVA. The neighbors that surround them here include Bergstrom and Adelsheim vineyards.
Their dry-farmed site sits on a level bench of sedimentary sandy soil with moderate water holding capacity and superior drainage. This combination is essential for Pinot Noir vines so they have enough water in the topsoil to sustain them through the summer. The site is planted with a mixture of Pinot Noir clones of 777, 828, 115, and Pommard. The vine spacing is high density with about 2,000 vines per acre, with one meter spacing between vines. The yield is less than 3 pounds per vine.
Today, there are two small vineyard blocks totaling just under five acres, and includes Lagrein, the Italian red grape variety native to the valleys of South Tyrol in northern Italy.
