Many wine lovers dream of taking that step of making wine for themselves. However, it’s a much bigger step – a leap of faith, in fact – to turn one’s avocation into the business of making and selling your wines to the public.

Join us as we talk with winemaker Eric Carucci, about how he approached wading into the world of wine – as a vocation. We’ll talk about small-lot winemaking as well as some of the business side of things for the Carucci family’s budding enterprise.

Malbec has become a hot commodity in the market place in recent years, thanks to Argentina’s success with the varietal. However, the grape’s ancestral home in southwest France, near the city of Cahors, has become part of a renaissance taking place that may revive the legacy of the Malbec grape.

In this ancient landscape, younger winemakers are often following in their family’s footsteps, balancing old world ideals, while still entertaining new methods such as biodynamics. It’s the perfect opportunity to bring a new world approach to a old world region.

Join us we attend Cahors Malbec Days, in Cahors, France. In part 2 we’ll hear from Paul Bush and Tim Wright from Madroña Vineyards; Jean-Luc Baldès, from Clos Triguedina; Philippe Lejeune, from Château de Chambert; and Gregory Orr, a local resident and wine lover.

Argentina – A Reach For Higher Ground

Interestingly, Argentina’s wine history and culture began about the same time as our’s here in the U.S. Arguably more interesting is the fact that it began with the same impetus – Italian immigration. Today, Argentina has become known as the world’s largest purveyor of Malbec. Another thing that singles out Argentina – some of the highest altitude vineyards in the world.

Chicago native Jeff Mausbach’s interest in wine, and an Argentine lady, led him to Argentina in the 1990s. He worked thirteen years for the Catena family before deciding to pursue a dream of developing his own wine project, Manos Negras. With an eye for selecting unique vineyards, Jeff is now making everything from Mendoza Malbec to Patagonian Pinot, and loving every minute of it.

Join us as we talk with Jeff Mausbach about the history, geography and grapes of Argentina. If you really want to geek-out about vineyard talk, this show’s for you!
