2014 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Hollywood and the Vine

We’re on to another of the seminars from the 2014 World of Pinot Noir. This one had something of a unique twist – combining Hollywood and wine…or Vine, in this case.

The focus here was to talk about wine themes in film by honoring two wine movies, Sideways and Somm. This was also the 10th anniversary of the release of Sideways, a movie that ‘launched a thousand Pinots,’ and allegedly put the brakes to Merlot’s ascendancy.

Moderated by Sunset Magazine’s wine editor, Sara Schneider, the panel included Hitching Post’s Frank Ostini and tasting room whiz Chris Burroughs representing Sideways, and sommeliers Brian McClintic and Dlynn Proctor featured in the movie Somm that chronicled their efforts to pass the prestigious Master Sommelier exam. Of course, this wasn’t confined to just talking, as each of the panelists were also expected to identify several wines blind to demonstrate their respective wine prowess. L’audace, l’audace, toujours l’audace!

We’re back with Part 2 of the Insider Wine seminar from the 2014 World of Pinot Noir. Previously held in the Central Coast city of Shell Beach, the event moved to the gorgeous Bacara Resort in Santa Barbara beginning this year.

In a return engagement from his outstanding Burgundy seminar at the 2013 WOPN, Don Kinnan, CSS, CWE, and the lead instructor for the French Wine Society’s new Master Burgundy Certificate program, led us through a few of these “insider” appellations, including Marsannay, Fixin, Pernand-Vergelesses, Savigny-Les-Beaune, Monthelie, Auxey-Duresses, Chassagne-Montrachet (a red!), Santenay, and the mountain of Corton. Of course, the seminar included a short history of the viticulture and principal vineyards and producers in each of these villages. Plus, 12 wines were selected to represent the best terroirs from these villages, and included a tasting of the 2005 Corton and 2006 Corton-Charlemagne.

Join us as we listen to Don Kinnan provide insight into the lesser sampled “insider wines” of Burgundy, all in Part 2 of: Insider Wines of the Côte d’Or.

One of the biggest thrills in wine, is finding bottles that perform above their price level. And, while Burgundy is not particularly known for bargains, there are still some excellent quality-to-price values to be found from several, shall we say, “less travelled” appellations and villages. These “insider wines” are often sought out by knowledgeable Burgundy enthusiasts who enjoy their value and pleasure, while saving their more expensive, high profile bottles for special occasions.

Over the past several years, wine tasters have been using the term “minerality” to describe specific vinous attributes that include: wet stone, crushed stone, chalk, flint, racy acidity, salinity and the actual taste or smell of minerals. Since science has now debunked the original assumption that these aromas and flavors were translated directly from the earth to the wine via the vine, how do we now account for “minerality” in a wine? More importantly, what exactly is minerality – how do we define it? Seems like a simple question, right? Well, maybe not so much.

Join us as we sit in on a 2013 WOPN seminar on the subject of minerality, to hear the impressions and opinions on the matter from winemakers: Mike Waller (Calera), Jason Jardin (Flowers), Fintan DuFresne (Chamisal), and James Cahill (Soter), with author and writer Karen MacNeil (The Wine Bible) moderating.

A couple of years ago, the 2011 World of Pinot Noir presented a seminar on alcohol and balance, with a goal of panelist discussion to determine if alcohol and balance were mutually exclusive, or if one affected the other – adversely or otherwise. It was a hot-button topic among consumers and in the media at the time, where two separate camps of people had very decided opinions about the answer. The panel conversation was spirited, and the seminar turned out to be fascinating on several levels – not the least of which was because one of the panelists pulled a prank on another regarding the actual alcohol level of a specific wine. The rest, as they say, is history.

So, can lightning strike twice in the same place? And, what hath two years wrought to the discussion? Join us as we hear the impressions and opinions on the matter from Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat), Joe Davis (Arcadian), Wells Guthrie (Copain), Adam Lee (Siduri), and Greg Brewer (Brewer-Clifton), with author and writer Karen MacNeil (The Wine Bible) moderating.

2013 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Not Pinot Blanc, Not Pinot Gris, it’s White Pinot Noir!?

Imagine Blanc de Noir without the bubbles. Weird? Not really. A few aspiring wineries and their “hey, let’s do it” winemakers are actually making what they correctly refer to as white pinot noir. Okay, so it’s still really the same as “normal” pinot noir, just without the color, right? Wrong! It turns out, when you leave the skins out of the fermentation process, it’s a whole new ballgame. Think Chardonnay – but with a completely different personality. The aromatic qualities take a quantum leap, and the flavor and textures, though similar to pinot – are still…well, different!

So, who makes this stuff? Well, so far it seems confined to Oregon (Anne Amie, Erath, Domaine Serene, Willakenzie Estate, J.K. Carriere, Ghost Hill, Novy Family), and to California (Schramsberg, and Domaine Carneros). When you consider it costs just as much to make as (red) pinot noir, as well as it taking the grapes away from the pinot noir sales, you can see why there’s not much of it around.

2013 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Up Close and Personal with Kosta Browne

When Dan Kosta and Michael Browne created their eponymous label in 1997, they weren’t quite sure how long it would take to get it up and running. But, by the 2003 vintage everyone had dubbed them an “overnight success.” The movie Sideways was fueling the Pinot Noir craze, and Kosta Browne, with a waiting list to get on the mailing list, was certainly riding the crest of the wave.

In 2009, Dan, Michael and business partner Chris Costello were approached to sell a controlling interest to the Vincraft Group, Sonoma-based investment group. The offer – a reported $40 million! For guys who had pooled their tips as start-up money, the offer was literally too good to refuse. The agreement allowed some of the winery’s original investors, mostly friends and families, a chance to cash out their investments. As Executive winemaker, Michael would still oversee the winemaking, and it was not expected that business management or operations would change much.

However, one doesn’t build a brand without forming excellent business relationships. And, Dan and Michael were certainly adept at doing that very thing. Please join us, at one of seminars from the 2013 World of Pinot Noir, as we hear from Michael Browne, along with some of those very people without whom Michael freely admits, none of this would have been possible. As with most wine events, it often comes down to the people – the producers and those behind the scenes – that make attending an event like the World of Pinot Noir both fun and interesting. And, while it’s always nice to taste the wines from artisan producers, it can be challenging to find the opportunity to actually talk with them – especially during a busy tasting. So, we really enjoy sharing our interviews with them, getting the “back story” and finding out more about the people who make these wines. And while we’re at it, it’s almost as fascinating to get a look behind the curtain, to hear what kind of dedication it takes to plan and organize events such as these.

2012 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Natural Winemaking

Natural winemaking – yet another hot button topic over the past couple of years, was discussed in some depth at the 2012 World of Pinot Noir. The panelists included both small winery winemakers who practice various degrees of “natural” winemaking: Bradley Brown, Big Basin Vineyards; Peter Cargasacchi, Cargasacchi Vineyards; Nathan Kandler, Thomas Fogarty Winery; and Joe Wright, Left Coast Cellars, as well as larger wineries that do not necessarily pursue the extremes of “natural” winemaking due to economy of scale concerns: Scott Kelley, Estancia Estates Winery; Brian Maloney, DeLoach Vineyards; well known author and proponent of “natural” wines Alice Feiring, author of Naked Wine; and Clark Smith, the founder of Vinovation (a provider of alcohol reduction tools, volatile acidity reduction, juice concentration, supplier of tannin adjunct, etc) and vintner at WineSmith.

Join us as we hear from natural winemaking devotees, or maybe the not-so-much devotees, in a seminar moderated by John Haeger, author of North American Pinot Noir, and Pacific Pinot Noir. Maybe we’ll even get a solid definition of the phrase, “natural winemaking.” But don’t hold your breath.

2012 World of Pinot Noir Seminar – Technique vs. Terroir: The Cube Project

We’ve always wondered what role the winemaker plays in determining whether a wine truly speaks of its origins – or, its terroir. For instance, is it possible to make an Oregon Pinot taste as though it came from California – or vice versa? Thankfully, the 2012 World of Pinot Noir featured a seminar discussing this very subject. The seminar, titled Technique vs. Terroir: The Cube Project, covered an experiment currently being conducted by three winemakers – one in Oregon, and two in California.

The concept was fairly straightforward. Three wineries, Anne Amie Vineyards (Oregon), Bouchaine Vineyards (Carneros), and Lincourt Vineyards (Santa Barbara Co.) would split 6-tons of fruit equally among themselves, by sending a 2-ton lot of fruit (or must) to each of the other wineries. The idea was to have each winemaker produce a wine with each of the others fruit – a total of three wines. This would afford them the opportunity to see their home vineyard through someone else’s eyes.

Thomas Houseman (Anne Amie Vineyards), Andrew Brooks (Bouchaine Vineyards), and Leslie Mead Renaud (Lincourt Vineyards) were responsible for the picking decisions at their respective wineries; therefore each of the three wines made from a particular lot would start on equal footing. From there, each winemaker made individual decisions on production methods. The results? Well, you’ll just have to listen for yourself.

Alcohol and Balance – could there be a more controversial issue for today’s wine geeks? Well, thankfully, the 2011 World of Pinot Noir held a seminar on this very contentious topic. Joining N.Y. Times columnist Eric Asimov as moderator, was an illustrious (and, we might add “balanced”) group of panel members: Jim Clendenen (Au Bon Climat), Adam Tolmach (The Ojai Vineyard), Josh Jensen (Calera), Rajat Parr (Sommelier and restaurateur), Adam Lee (Siduri), and Michael Browne (Kosta Browne).

So, how are picking decisions made? And, how do these, in turn, affect the final alcohol level of the wine? Is alcohol really just a number? Does the percent of alcohol affect the balance of the wine in the bottle? Yes, most of these questions will be answered during the seminar. And, no, boxing gloves weren’t handed out to the panelists. But, there were some strong feelings among colleagues on both sides of the issue. However, more importantly, everyone gave a good accounting of themselves. Was a final decision rendered? Well, you’ll just have to hear for yourself.

As the Assistant Editor of Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar (IWC) and a contributor to winophilia.com, Tanzer’s online wine magazine, Josh is a very busy guy. He has been responsible for the IWC’s annual reviews of the wines of California’s Sonoma Valley and Central Coast, Oregon, Chile, Spain, France’s Loire Valley, Champagne, Mâcon, Beaujolais, Rhône Valley and Australia.

Allen Meadows, a.k.a. Burghound, moderated this entertaining Seminar featuring the owner and winemaker of Domaine Fourrier, Jean Marie Fourrier. Domaine Fourrier has a four generation history in Gevrey-Chambertain and was one of the first Domaines in Burgundy to export wine to the United States. The Domaine experienced a revitalization with the arrival of Jean Marie Fourrier in 1994, and the wines, as Allen Meadows noted at the Seminar, “Are built on balance, not concentration.” Jean Marie Fourrier says his wines are only crafted from vines at least 30 years old, and represent “terroir in a glass.”
